i made myself a promise last year that i would do the triathlon in mexico for cinco de mayo.
problems: 1) absolutely hate to run, 2) do not own a bike and haven't been on one for at least 10 years, and 3) never truly learned how to swim and am afraid of swimming in the ocean.
all the more reasons to accomplish this goal. not only is a triathlon something to check off the "life list" but it is a great way to get over some fears and get into shape.
i got my 2nd bike ever superbowl sunday. my first one was when i was five, all cute and purple with a little bag that said puppy love on the front. i've only done maybe a total of 5 miles on this new one. it is amazing how sore it makes your bum bones...
i've tried to go running several times in the past few weeks. like i said before, i hate running and never really got the hang of it growing up. i did it while playing basketball in 7th & 8th grade. used to run at harbison field with my high school friends when we were "dieting." but it was never my thing.
this past year i was diagnosed with old lady feet and now have to wear old lady feet inserts in my athletic shoes. they are to correct a variety of issues, some that caused me a great deal of pain in my previous attempts to run. plus, i don't stand like a duck anymore. bonus! but they make my feet ache in ways i never knew they could. it has definitely been an uphill battle.
i ran my first full mile yesterday. i only need to be able to run 3 point something in may so i am on track. and a mile might not seem like much to some, but to me it is everything.
and i owe it all to my sweet hubba hubby who ran beside me every step of the way, pushing me on, giving me guidance, and encouragement. then a nice congratulatory slap on the rear at the end before he headed off to run several more miles at a much quicker pace. show off.
now for the swimming... i think i am going to wait on that one until i build up my strength (and get over my nerves). i'll keep you posted.

Wow Melanie, I am impressed. You are fighting your fears and streching your horizons. You are pretty much amazing.
I'm beyond impressed. I hate running too and can't imagine doing a triathlon. Look at you conquering mountains! Maybe a second attempt at tamales in December?
I've been looking into getting Lisa a bike, what kind did you get?
it was sorta one of those things where it was either i get the bike today or i give up on the whole idea. we looked online a little, tried play it again sports and they had nothing. so we ended up at sports authority and the bike brand is columbia. i like it but i know nothing about bikes. lincoln rode it around the store and said it was a good one.
WOW Melanie, that was ispiring! it really makes me want to get into shape and start running too! I am not so sure about the biking and swimming, biking does bother the buttox and swimming, agreed on the ocean fear, Jaws ruined it for me. Can't wait to hear more on your success! Funny header too, love that movie.. I laughed in the inside.
