gemma dylan arrived 12/11 at 5:55pm after over 24 hours in the hospital. she weighed 9lbs 6oz and was 21 inches long. we decided to be induced since it didn't appear she was coming any time soon on her own and we were guessing she was going to be a bit on the big side. we weren't even close to guessing over 9lbs so that was a surprise. and yes, we really didn't know what we were having until the doctor said "it's a girl!"
i checked into the hospital at 4pm on thursday with slight contractions (so slight i didn't even know i was having them) and roughly 1cm. they gave me the first round of drugs at 6pm. i was up all night with "mild" contractions and made it to 4cm by 6am. lincoln slept throught the night, deeply too. he heard about it in the morning, let me tell ya!
dr. came in around 7am and broke my water. they started pitocin then. from 7am to 2pm i had contractions that lasted at least 1 min each and came every 2-3 minutes. it was pretty rough. plus i had no sleep. sometimes my mom and lincoln would catch me snoring in between contractions. around 2pm they checked me again and i had only progressed to a little over 5cm.
forget this! i literally ordered the epidural just like it was room service. it was not the most pleasant experience, and lincoln watched them stick that needle in my back with wide eyes. but it helped me get going. i was able to rest and progressed to where i needed to be within 2 hours.
then after an hour of pushing and several jokes cracked in between contractions, out she came. our perfect baby girl.
literally 5 minutes later, my mom, dad, and lincoln were all on their phones texting the news.
